I basically have two evening skin care routines. One is minimal, for when I’m absolutely knackered and just want to fall into bed asap and not bother with all my lotions and potions, and the other is for when I really want to wind down and relax before sleep. There’s sometimes a middle ground, but generally, I’ll be going down one of these routes.
The Holy Crap I Need to Sleep Routine
This is for when I haven’t slept in twenty hours, or I’ve been busy all evening running around doing jobs and I just want to collapse into a heap and sleep. The word routine is reallllly stretching things as it consists of just two products at its most basic. I use the La Roche Posay Micellar Water all over my face on a cotton pad to remove any lingering makeup, and then again on a clean pad to cleanse more thoroughly. I prefer this to the Garnier classic as I feel like the Garnier one leaves a kind of film on my skin which I don’t like. I love a double cleanse, but sometimes I just cannot be arsed and this will generally do the job of getting me clean and makeup-free.
Maybe I’ll smudge a little moisturiser on my nose and across my cheekbones where I get particularly dry skin, but more often than not I’ll just blob a bit of eye cream, again La Roche Posay, all over my lids and under my eyes. I like this one simply because it’s one of the few things I’m not allergic to these days. After this, I’ll crawl under my duvet and hope the world has disappeared by the time I wake up.
The Soothing De-Stress Routine
This routine is for when I haven’t been sleeping well, for the nights when I lie awake thinking about the meaning of life and similar fruitless endeavours. To try and calm my mind and really chill out in the hopes of getting a decent sleep, I like to take a little more time with my routine. I find that this little routine will generally help me slow down and really prep myself for a good night’s sleep. This is still a long way from one of those crazy ten-step Korean routines, but this is enough for me!
I start with a double cleanse, using the same micellar water as always but following it with the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser and a nice warm flannel. I find that this really cleans my skin without drying it out, and the flannel gives a little bit of exfoliation as well.
The next step depends on how my skin is feeling that day. If I’m feeling dry and a bit gross and grey, I’ll use the Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Night Pads, which will perk my skin right up but aren’t something I’d want to use every day as they’re fairly strong.
If my skin is feeling sensitive or irritated, my favourite thing at the moment is the REN Evercalm Mask. I’ll be writing more about this on Saturday, but it really calms down my skin and I find that my skin is noticeably less irritated after using it.
Once that’s all done, it’s time for serums and oils! I tend to throw on a bit of The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid whenever I can, as I just find that it makes everything just that bit more effective. For a really lovely sleepy routine, I’ll then use the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, which I find reduces my redness and generally helps with repairing my skin. A bonus is that it smells strongly of lavender and other botanicals, and lavender is one of the things that can really help me fall asleep in a pinch. My ever faithful eye cream is the last step, although I have been known to add on a splodge of moisturiser, usually the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, when my face resembles a desert, which is basically all winter.
Both of these routines, used in moderation and alternated with a middle ground, work for me and generally keep my skin in good nick, while also doing the job of either lulling me to sleep or enabling me to pass out as quickly as possible without worrying about makeup clogging up my pores.
What’s your skincare routine like? Am I missing out on any really amazing products?
