My Fitness Motivational Methods (Longer post!)

I am horribly unfit. I'm not just unfit though, I'm also fat. There's no denying it at this point. I'm not horrendously obese, I don't struggle to buy clothes on the high street, but I am still fat.  My family has a history of addiction and type 2 diabetes, and my doctor has informed me that I'm borderline diabetic.  I've struggled with my weight since I was a teenager, but my struggles with food were far more of a problem for me.  I've had counselling for bulimia and then binge eating disorder over the years, and I've concluded that I just have a very unhealthy relationship with food. 

I currently weigh around 13 stone, and am 5ft5, putting me in the obese category on the BMI scale.  I am aware of all the flaws in the BMI system, but I don't have a huge muscle mass (quite to the contrary) and I'm pretty average overall in every way except my weight.  I realise that weight isn't the best way to track improved health, but it's what I have chosen.  

I would like to lose around 3 stone, putting me in the healthy category for my height at 10 stone.  I don't think I've been 10 stone since I was about 13!  I have a long way to go, but I have a loose plan to get there.  I haven't set a time limit on when I want to lose the weight by, as long as it goes, I don't mind how long it takes (although obviously the quicker the better).  

I'm using MyFitnessPal's Calorie Counter App on my phone, and I'm attempting to limit myself to 1200 calories per day.  While this is my goal on the app, in reality I am aiming for 1500 a day.  Ideally I would eat 1200, but so long as I don't go over 1500 I won't beat myself up.  The app is by no means perfect, and I don't use it as faithfully as I should, but the last few days (aside from a work trip to Wahaca last night) I have returned to it after being lazy for a while.  My username is SpareOom if you fancy a nosey (knowing people are watching might actually make me eat healthily!).

I also follow NerdFitness' Beginner Body Weight Workout (three times) every other day, which leaves my legs feeling like jelly and my arms slightly detached from my body - I did say I was unfit!  It's tough, but it's getting easier, so I'm going to start increasing the amount of circuits gradually.

I've also decided that I really do need rewards for myself as I go along, except I can't fall into what I usually do: rewarding myself with food.  Instead my goals are things I really want.

Tldr; I'm fat, I don't like it, using MyFitnessPal, Nerdfitness and pretty things I want as motivation.

Anyone else trying anything similar for self-improvement?

  1. I used to be very underweight, and after gaining a bit I wanted to tone up. I was never one for working out though. December 2015, I started doing HIIT workouts 3 times a week and haven't stopped yet! What has really helped me is taking progress photos, seeing how and if I've improved. If I can get into a good workout routine, anyone can! May I suggest Lucy Wyndham Read on YouTube, I call her my "personal at home trainer". A lot of people swear by her HIIT routines to lose weight! I love the idea of rewarding yourself with nice makeup once you hit a certain goal.
